The first project out of Sony Online's Austin studio, this action-based MMO explores the various worlds of DC Comics' superheroes and villains. A massively-multiplayer experience, DC Universe Online brings high-energy action to the forefront with a combat system designed to deliver a fast-paced action experience with the extraordinary powers of your personally created heroes and villains at your disposal. Battle with or against their favorite DC Super Heroes and Villains including Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, and The Joker. For the very first time, players and fans will be able to enter this fabled world as an active force for good or evil.It is known that players will choose a city of origin for their character, the only known cities being Metropolis and Gotham City. Another location currently known to be in the game is Arkham Asylum, Gotham City's mental institution for criminals. Players can also go to the Justice League of America Watchtower, headquarters of the Justice League. Each character is given either a Justice League or a Legion of Doom communicator - depending on their choice of playing as either a hero or a villain - and the character's allegiance will affect how the game is played; for example, a hero character may encounter a thug robbing an armored truck while a villain character will instead rob (or, depending on character level, assist with the robbing of) said armored truck. It is also known that player characters have threat ratings which will cause both heroes and villains alike to interact accordingly with the character. The game's first Case is a battle between Superman, Lex Luthor, and Doomsday where the player can aid either Superman or Luthor in defeating/capturing Doomsday, respectively. Another Case involves a mutagen outbreak at Star Labs that infects all of the employees in the building. Another case involves (Hero tech characters only) saving Robin from Harley Quinn in Amusement Mile, and stopping the Joker from gassing Gotham City.
The story of DCUO is set in the "present day" and the game begins with the arrival of a time-traveling Lex Luthor who has come to warn the Earth about a future battle that kills off the majority of heroes and villains, leaving the planet vulnerable to an invasion by Brainiac.
The cinematic trailer, "Who Do You Trust", which appears to be the opening sequence of the game, depicts a dark future where Lex Luthor and other villains are engaged in what seems to be a final battle against what's then left of the Justice League. The future Luthor and his allies (including Deathstroke, Joker and Harley Quinn, Black Adam, Giganta, Metallo, and Circe) battle Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Green Arrow, Flash, Green Lantern, and Cyborg. Half of Luthor's team (Black Adam, Giganta, Metallo, and Deathstroke) are defeated, while Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Green Arrow, and Green Lantern are destroyed. Luthor, Joker, Harley, and Cyborg remain while Brainiac's ship arrives overhead with an entire alien armada. Back in the present day, this future Luthor tells the Justice League that Braniac then proceeded to eliminate all of the heroes and villains who would attempt to defend Earth from his attack, Luthor remaining as the sole survivor. He stole some of Braniac's technology in order to return to the present day and inform the heroes.
Luthor sends some form of energy towards the surface of the Earth, which ripples in a shockwave around the geographical locations around Metropolis and Gotham City, and tells the JLA that he has just given them a fighting chance against Brainiac. It turns out that this shockwave is Lex Luthor releasing exobots stolen from Brainiac into earth's atmosphere. These exobots hold the power to bestow the powers of superheroes or supervillains upon anyone they come into contact with. Luthor hopes that this will give Earth a fighting chance against Brainiac's invasion.

So You'll get to create your own superhero or villain, choosing their particular powers, according to the Edge article. So you'll decide whether to attack using fire or ice, for example, and move around using acrobatics or the power of flight. Other potential abilities mentioned in the article include speed-running and teleportation.
As with a traditional MMO your character will level up as you progress, and you'll develop your powers. When the game starts you might be able to fly, but only later will you learn how to pull off specific moves and attacks in mid-air.
Although you don't get to "be" any of the famous DC characters, you do get to interact with them. That might mean you end up saving Superman from being stabbed with a shard of kryptonite by Lex Luthor. Or, if you're a villain, you could cause carnage by chucking cars around downtown Metropolis, thereby encouraging the boy in blue to turn up and fight you.
Metropolis is one of two large shared environments revealed so far, the other being Gotham City. Unlike World of Warcraft, DC Universe will be comprised of a mix of these environments and separate instances. And while there will still be instances and raids, the emphasis will be on fast-paced action rather than grinding.
There will be PvP arenas, and you'll be able to make use of your superpowers and those of others in interesting ways. For example, someone might freeze your character in a block of ice, then pick up the block and chuck it at another player. In some instances, PvP fights will end up turning into giant PvE boss battles.
In the future, it's possible we could see models, environments and costumes from the game turning up in other DC Comics properties, and there are plans for plot crossovers. "We can tie-in future DC tentpole events and translate the stories for the gaming world, and have them occur simultaneously," said Lee. "The possibilities are numerous and very exciting."
