1.1.1. MACV-SOG (Studies and Observation Group)

The Studies and Observation Group (SOG - Joint Unconventional Warfare Task Force) was a highly classified, multi-service United States special operations unit which conducted covert unconventional warfare operations prior to and during the Vietnam War.

The Studies and Observations Group was a joint unconventional warfare task force created on 24 January 1964 by the Joint Chiefs of Staff as a subsidiary command of the Military Assistance Command, Vietnam (MACV). The unit conducted strategic reconnaissance missions in the Republic of Vietnam (South Vietnam), the Democratic Republic of Vietnam (North Vietnam), Laos, and Cambodia; carried out the capture of enemy prisoners, rescued downed pilots, and conducted rescue operations to retrieve prisoners of war throughout Southeast Asia; and conducted clandestine agent team activities and psychological operations.

It was mainly composed of personnel from the United States Army Special Forces, the United States navy SEALs, United States Air Force Combat Controllers, the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) Special Activities Division, and elements of the United States Marine Corps Force Reconnaissance units.

Call of Duty: Black Ops creator, Treyarch, consulted former SOG member Major John Plaster (US Army-Ret.), who shared his stories and experiences from the Vietnam War. These "special" soldiers were apparently so privileged that they could request anything, from unusual or expensive equipment to immediate and integral support from any U.S. regular unit. Many of the SOG Operatives in Vietnam, and Laos use Tigerstripe combat uniforms, while SOG operatives in arctic areas use winter overwhites.

A. Known Operatives :

Hudson

Mason

Frank Woods

Swift

Weaver

Reznov (Returning from Call of Duty: World at War)

Brooks

Harris

Bowman

Note : Reznov is, apparently, the only SOG member in the game that is not American, however his role is currently unknown.

B. Confirmed Weapons :

M1911

M202 Rocket Launcher

SPAS-12

1.1.2. 1st Cavalry Division

The 1st Cavalry Division (Heavy Division) was a unit of the United States Army that fought in the Vietnam War. It was one of the first units to apply helicopters to combat. The 1st Cavalry Division will appear in Call of Duty” Black Ops as a part of the American forces in Vietnam during the war.

Featured Missions :

"Victor Charlie" - A downed helicopter that bears the First Cavalry symbol is featured, both of the pilots are killed.

"Slaughterhouse" - A helicopter that gives support to the player bears the First Cavalry symbol.

1.1.3. USMC (United States Marine Corps)

The United States Marine Corps or USMC is a faction which appeared in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, Call of Duty: World at War, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 and Call of Duty: Black Ops.

The Marines will appear in Call of Duty: Black Ops only appeared in the mission "Slaughter House", which is set during the Battle of Hue of the Tet Offensive. The Marines will fight the actual battle while the SOG main characters will accomplish their own objective. They will give support if demanded by the SOG members. They appear to be Marine Force Reconnaissance as they were tiger-stripe camoflage instead of the olive-drab uniforms worn at the time. The Marines are also going to be a multiplayer faction in the game.

1.2.2. Viet Cong

The Viet Cong (Vietnamese: Việt Cộng) or National Front for the Liberation of South Vietnam was a military and political force in South Vietnam that appears in Call of duty: Black Ops. Their goal was the overthrow of the South Vietnamese government and reunification of North and South Vietnam and their principal (but not exclusive) opponents in this were the armed forces of the Republic of Vietnam and the United States of America. They were skilled in guerrilla warfare and were famous for their resourcefulness and cunning, particularly at using improvised booby traps, such as punji (bars of sharpened bamboo).

During the Call of Duty: Black Ops world premiere trailer, several Viet Cong combatants are seen fighting U.S. soldiers.

They are also seen in the E3 gameplay demos, where they appear in the campaign level "Victor Charlie".

Weaponry :

AK-47

RPK

2.0. CALL OF DUTY : BLACK OPS CHARACTER

2.1. Bowman

Affiliations : SOG (Studies and Observation Group)

Country : United States

Bowman is neither seen or heard from as of now, but as seen in the E3 stage demo, operative Frank Woods can be heard ordering him to take point and move, as seen in the mission "Victor Charlie".

2.2. Brooks (Black Ops)

Affiliations : SOG (Studies and Observation Group)

Status : Unknown

Brooks is a SOG operative that is set to appear in the Call of Duty: Black Ops campaign mission "WMD". He is shown in the level with Hudson, Weaver and Harris infiltrating a Soviet Union base in 1968. Later on, the squad splits up, with Weaver and Hudson rappelling into the base while Brooks and Harris rappelled down to the other walkway. Brooks is later seen strangling a Russian soldier and then throwing him over the edge of the walkway.

2.3. Frank Woods

Affiliations : USMC, CIA and SOG (Studies and Observation Group)

Rank : USMC Sergeant and SOG Special Agent

Sergeant Frank Woods is one of the main non-playable characters in the upcoming game Call of Duty: Black Ops. Woods is part of the Studies and Observation group. On Woods' left arm is a USMC tattoo, which suggests his branch of service. On the same arm, Frank also has a SOG tattoo reading "SOG TOUGH." He is voiced by James C. Burns. It has been confirmed that Woods will be seen at different times in his career and will not remain with the SOG the whole game.

Woods must have been from Marine Force Recon back in Vietnam, because there would be no other way for a Marine to become part of MACV-SOG unless he had done something very heroic or gotten multiple Silver Stars or Navy Crosses.

2.4. Harris (Black Ops)

Affiliations : SOG (Studies and Observation Group)

Status : KIA

Harris is a character that appears in Call of Duty: Black Ops in the level "WMD". He is shown in the level with teammates Hudson, Weaver and Brooks infiltrating a Soviet Union base in 1968. He is also a SOG operative, he dies by falling off a bridge and Hudson being unable to save him.

2.5. Hudson

Affiliations : SOG (Studies and Observation Group)

Special Agent Hudson is a SOG operative, and one of the main playable characters in Call of Duty: Black Ops. Hudson is a Vietnam War Spec Ops soldier, and is one of the playable campaign soldiers on the American side. He appears in the mission "WMD". The callsign for his squad during "WMD" is Kilo-1.

2.6. Kilo One

Kilo One was the callsign of a Studies and Observation group four-man squad which infiltrated a Soviet base in 1968.

Members :

Hudson

Weaver

Brooks

Harris

2.7. Kravtchenko

Affiliations : Red Army

General Kravtchenko is one of the antagonists in Call of Duty: Black Ops is most likely a Red Army officer, and conducted (just like the SOG) a black operation in Laos with his Spetsnaz unit. Kravtchenko is also the reason why the SOG is deployed in Vietnam. Kravtchenko is the only known General in Call of Duty: Black Ops.

2.8. Mason

Affiliations : CIA and SOG (Studies and Observation Group)

Rank : Sergeant

Status : Alive

Sergeant Mason is a SOG (Studies and Observation Group) operator and one of the main playable characters in Call of Duty: Black Ops. He has appeared as the playable character in the Pre-Release E3 version of the level "Victor Charlie". He also appears as the playable character in the level "Payback”.

2.9. Reznov

Affiliations : 3rd Shock Army, 62nd Rifle Division (Stalingrad) SOG (Studies and observation group)(Black Ops)

Rank : Sergeant (Call of Duty: World at War), Unknown (Call of Duty: Black Ops)

Status : Alive

Sergeant Reznov is a Russian squad leader of the Red Army in Call of Duty: World at War during World War II. He is also confirmed to play a major part in Call of Duty: Black Ops either assisting or as part of the SOG(Studies and Observation group).

Reznov returns in Call of Duty: Black Ops as a member of the Studies and Observation group. He appears in the mission "Victor Charlie", in a section inside Vietnamese tunnels. The fact that he is a member of SOG strongly implies that he has defected from the USSR, which is odd, seeming how patriotic he was in Call of Duty: World at War. Despite the 20 years that have passed since World at War and Black Ops, his appearance has not changed, still sporting the crew cut and thick beard. And Even after two and a half years he is still a Sergeant meaning he either turned down many promotions or the Red Army doesn't give promotions out lightly.

2.10. Swift

Affiliations : SOG (Studies and observation group)

Rank : SOG Special Agent

Status : Possibly KIA

Swift is one of the non-playable characters in the upcoming game Call of Duty: Black Ops. He is part of the Studies and Observation Group. Swift appears in the mission "Victor Charlie" where he progresses through the Viet Cong tunnel network with Mason. After briefly meeting with Reznov, Swift turns a corner and is killed by a Vietcong guerrilla.

It is currently unknown whether or not Swift's death is scripted. However, during a Gamestop interview with Mark Lamia he said that there's a 90% chance that he dies, and if the player can save him, he appears in another unknown misson with Mason and Bowman.

2.11. Thomas

Affiliations : SOG (Studies and observation group)

Rank : Major

Major Thomas is a confirmed character that will appear in Call of duty: Black Ops. He is the pilot that controls the SR-71 Blackbird in the mission "WMD."

2.12. Unnamed Radio Operator

Affiliations : USMC (United States Marine Corps)

The Unnamed Radio Operator is a character from Call of Duty: Black Ops, who appears in the mission "Slaughterhouse". His name is unknown as of now but may be revealed later. During the mission, he gives the player, Mason , a radio to call in helicopter reinforcements. He then asks if Mason is from the Studies and Observation Group, and Mason confirms he is. The Radio Operator is quite amazed at this, because he is only a Marine, and Mason outranks him. The Radio Operator is not seen anymore after calling in the reinforcements.

2.13. Weaver

Affiliations : CIA and SOG (Studies and Observation Group)

Weaver is one of the non-playable characters in the upcoming game, Call of Duty: Black Ops. He is part of the Studies and observation group and is a part of a squad (with the playable character) infiltrating a Soviet base during the mission "WMD". The callsign for his squad during "WMD" is Kilo-1. Weaver is voiced by David Conrad.

3.0. CALL OF DUTY : BLACK OPS WEAPON

Based on some very intricate and detailed viewing and analysis of the trailer that Treyarch has posted for the game, we have compiled a speculated list of weapons that may see light in the latest Call of Duty game, Black Ops. Keep in mind this is all speculation, but it has some very extensive analysis and research behind it, so this isn’t just some list put together by a 7 year old who thinks x3 frags is awesome.

3.1. AK-47

The AK-47 is a Russian assault rifle.

Magazine Size : 30 rounds

Fire Mode : Automatic

Used by : Viet Cong, North Vietnamese Army, Soviet Soldiers

The AK-47 makes it's return in the DS version of Call of Duty: Black Ops. The AK-47 resembles the same as Call of Duty 4s and the console version of Call of Duty: Black Ops's own AK-47. It appears the only attachment known of the AK-47 for now is the grenade launcher.

3.2. AK-74u

The AK-74u is a submachine gun.

Fire Mode : Automatic

The AK-74u has the same empty and mid-magazine reload animation as the AK-47, albeit a bit faster. It was seen in the multiplayer teaser trailer in the hands of another player. It appears to have the stock folded.

3.3. AUG (Black Ops)

The AUG is an assault rifle.

Magazine Size : 30

Fire Mode : Automatic

Used by : SOG

Attachments : Arctic Camouflage - Arctic camouflage of a different style is seen on the AUG in the two trailers of Call of Duty: Black Ops , it is given a more horizontal pattern. As seen on the Commando, the receiver of the weapon is camouflaged while the stock, barrel and handguard are just painted gray. The same scheme also applies for other camouflages for this weapon. The same style camouflage is also seen on the Crossbow.

Swarovski Scope - The Swarovski Scope is integral 1.5x optical sight exclusive used on the Steyr AUG.

Silencer - The Silencer is a weapon attachment. They prevent gunfire from showing up on enemy minimaps and make it harder to hear, but as a disadvantage, the suppressor either reduces the range at which weapons do their maximum damage, reduces damage of the weapon as a whole, or decreases the damage done by the weapon at its longest range.

In the E3 demo, instead of holding onto the foregrip or the handguard, the player character seemed to hold onto the trigger guard. In a more recent demo of this mission at Gamescom, the player was holding onto the foregrip.

3.4. Arctic Camouflage

Arctic Camouflage is a weapon camouflage.

Arctic camouflage of a different style is seen on the AUG in the two trailers of Call of Duty: Black Ops, it is given a more horizontal pattern. As seen on the Commando, the receiver of the weapon is camouflaged while the stock, barrel and handguard are just painted gray. The same scheme also applies for other camouflages for this weapon. The same style camouflage is also seen on the Crossbow. It works best in snowy maps.

3.5. L96A1

The L96A1 is a bolt-action sniper rifle.

Magazine Size : 5

Recoil : High

Fire Mode : Bolt-Action

Nothing else about the weapon is known at the moment.

3.6. Ballistic Knife

The Ballistic Knife is a type of knife.

When drawn, players can fire the knife's blade, which results in a silent one hit kill, much like the Throwing Knife. The blade can be picked up, and loaded back into the handle to be used again. It does not replace the normal melee knife, as shown in the multiplayer teaser, a player is shown knifing (with a different animation) while the Ballistic Knife had no blade in it. Killing a player with the Ballistic Knife's ranged attack gives the player the message "Skewer" at the top of the screen, similar to the Call of duty: Modern Warfare 2 message "Bullseye!". The Ballistic Knife's extra blade can be seen in the left hand, and can be used as a regular melee attack. It is placed in the player's inventory, and can be drawn like Claymores and C4.

3.7. C4

C4 is an explosive.

Unlocked at : Level 43 (Major)

Maximum

Ammunition : 1 (MP)

Used by : Task Force 141, U.S. Army Rangers

C4 will return in Call of Duty: Black Ops. It has been confirmed to be used in the level "Victor Charlie", where you plant it and run to a safe spot. It has not been confirmed that C4 will be in multiplayer. A fake packet of C4 can be found on the RC-XD that is included in the Call of Duty: Black Ops Prestige Edition.

3.8. China Lake

The China Lake is a pump action grenade launcher.

Magazine Size : 2 rounds

Fire Mode : Pump-action

Tier : 18

Nothing else about the weapon is known at the moment.

2.9. Commando

The Commando is an assault rifle.

Magazine Size : 30 rounds

Fire Mode : Automatic

Used by : SOG

In some images, the Commando can be seen with 2 types of magazine, the non-STANAG and the STANAG. It is unknown how the two differ, however they may likely change as the timeline of the game advances (STANAG Magazines were manufactured in the late 80s.)

3.10. Crossbow

The Crossbow is a silent and high-powered weapon.

Magazine Size : 1 Bolt

Fire Mode : 1 Spare Bolt

Known

Ammunition : Standard arrow

Explosive Tip - The Explosive Tip is a weapon attachment for Crossbow. It is fired from the Crossbow, sticking into an enemy then exploding within 2 seconds of impact.

This weapon is almost identical to the Explosive Tip Crossbow in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare: Mobilized. The Crossbow is also seen without a Sniper Scope. This may be because some weapons you have to achieve a certain amount of kills to get it.

Note : It is unknown at this time if the explosion from the bolt will work similar to that of the semtex grenade of Modern Warfare 2. Though as the bolt striking the player showed no experience boost or "stuck" notification, it may be possible that only a direct shot may down the intended target in a single shot.

3.11. Death Machine

The Death Machine is a weapon obtainable from a Care package.

Magazine Size : 499 rounds

Fire Mode : Automatic

Maximum

Ammunition : 998(MP)

It has a maximum capacity of 499 rounds. This gun can be seen in the wager modes gameplay. Treyarch said in an interview that they tried to make a portable, manual version of the Sentry Gun, however said they came across difficulty with the idea. Presumably, this is the portable version they mentioned.

3.12. Desert Camouflage

Desert Camouflage is a pattern of camouflage used by the military for use in desert and urban desert environments.

It is a very effective camouflage for almost all maps, aside from arctic maps, and darker colored maps, such as Estate, Wasteland, etc.

2.13. Dragunov

The Dragunov is a semi-automatic Russian sniper rifle.

Magazine Size : 10 rounds

Fire Mode : Semi - Automatic

Used by : Ultranationalist, Brazilian Militia, OpFor

The player reloads the Dragunov with the right hand, unlike other weapons in the series where they reload with the left. The Dragunov returns in Call of Duty: Black Ops. It has been seen in multiplayer videos and has a new scope reticle and the ability to change zoom level.

3.14. Famas

The FAMAS is an automatic assault rifle.

Magazine Size : 30 rounds

Recoil : Medium High

Fire Mode : Automatic

Used by : Ultranationalist

The FAMAS was seen in the multiplayer teaser trailer for Call of Duty: Black Ops. It appeared coloured and was designed differently than Modern Warfare 2's FAMAS. The FAMAS in Black Ops is seen firing automatically with high amounts of recoil, instead of a three-round burst.

2.15. Knife

The Knife is the standard close quarters combat (CQC) melee weapon.

There are currently two known knives featured in Black Ops:

The regular knife, although appears to be a Secondary Weapon.

The Ballistic Knife, when drawn, players can fire the knife's blade, which results in a silent one hit kill, much like the Throwing Knife.

The knife cooldown time can be shortened by quickly hitting the equipment button then switch weapons button. This is most effective when used with the Throwing Knife, and is impossible with Frags and the Blast Shield.

3.16. M16/CAR-15

The M16A1 is an assault rifle.

Magazine Size : 30 rounds

Recoil : Fully Automatic

The M16A1 was confirmed to be in the game from a development video showing a test run of the game.

3.17. M1911

The M1911, also known as the Colt .45, is a handgun.

Fire Mode : Semi - Automatic

Used by : SOG

An M1911 with "Sally" engraved on it is seen at the end of both the two trailers for Call of Duty: Black Ops. There is a total of eight tally marks along its slide, said marks may be "kill marks".

3.18. M203

The M203 is a single shot grenade launcher attachment.

Magazine Size : 1 Round

Rate of Fire : Low

Used by : SOG

The grenade launcher is set to return in Call of Duty: Black Ops. It is seen mounted on the Commando assault rifle and has a very similar reload animation and the same aiming system as the Modern Warfare games. Unlike the M203 in the Modern Warfare series, the M203 creates the same firing sound as the Rifle Grenade Launcher in Call of Duty: World at War, though this may have been a placeholder. It was seen in the E3 demo of the game. The level that had the grenade launcher was "Payback". The M203 appears in a screen-shot of Black Ops DS, attached to an AK-47. It is unknown whether it will be an attachment for all Assault Rifles or be exclusive to the AK-47.

3.19. M60

The M60 is a machine gun.

Fire Mode : Automatic

Used by : SOG, USMC, 1st Cavalry Division

An older M60 variant will appear mounted on a Helicopter in Call of Duty: Black Ops, as seen in multiple pictures.

3.20. M67 Fragmentation Grenade

The M67 Fragmentation Grenade is a small hand-held anti-personnel weapon.

Used by : All Forces

M67 Fragmentation Grenade is designed to be thrown, and then explode after a short amount of time. Due to it's smaller range and somewhat "nerfed" damage, it is recommended you throw as far as you can and let it roll to its target.

3.21. MP5k

The MP5K is a submachine gun.

Fire Mode : Automatic

Used by : SOG

Attachment : Silencer

The MP5K is set to appear in Call of Duty: Black Ops as a prototype variant. It is equipped with a unique foregrip which is only featured on the prototype variant.

3.22. Python

The Python is a revolver.

Magazine Size : 6

Used by : SOG

Attachment : Flashlight

Snob Nose - Snub Nose is an attachment available for use on the Python in Call of Duty: Black Ops, seen in the Reveal Multiplayer Trailer released in August 2010. It is currently unknown what it does, but it is guessed to be similar to the Sawed-off attachment for the double-barrelled shotgun.

The Python was seen at an E3 stage demo, paired with a Flashlight. In the demo, it is held similar to how characters would hold a Tactical Knife in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. Players will use the Magnum-Flashlight combo while clearing underground tunnels during the level "Victor Charlie". It could also be noted that the sound of the reload was similar, if not the same, as the .357 Magnum from Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2.

In the first Multiplayer trailer, the Python appeared with an attachment called Snub Nose. What the attachment does to the gun's stats is currently unknown. According to the E3 Demo, the Python is capable of decapitating and/or gibbing enemies. When Mason shoots the Viet Cong soldier after exiting the caves, his head seems to explode. In the E3 demo, the player is capable of reloading the Python using one hand (the other holding the flashlight) at a similar speed to a user with two hands.

3.23. RPG-7

The RPG-7 is a rocket launcher.

Magazine Size : 1

Fire Mode : Single Shot

Summit in multiplayer is a narrow map with severe drops on all sides. Summit features plenty of variety when it comes to buildings and platforms. The interior of one large building in the middle is the most open area on the Summit map, with most of it made up of narrow gaps and pathways. 6.9. Combat Training

Combat Training is a new game mode in Call of Duty: Black Ops. Fight against enemy AI in a training mode. It serves as offline multiplayer for those lacking an internet connection, those who do not wish to play online, or for those who want to try out new tactics or practice with different weapons. It features a separate ranking and unlock system with AI opponents instead of online enemies. It can be played cooperatively.

The players can change how difficult it is to kill the AI opponents much like single player's difficulties:

Recruit - Recruit is one of the four difficulty settings in the Call of Duty series. It is the easiest of the four difficulties, as the player takes small amounts of damage from most weapons and the AI is generally inaccurate. The difficulty is recommended for players new to the First Person Shooter genre.

It is NOT recommended to rush ahead of your allies, because it is possible that every enemy in the vicinity will open up at you. Only rush ahead when there are no more than three enemies, and you have a fast firing weapon with sufficient ammo.

Regular - Regular is one of the four difficulty settings in the Call of Duty series. It can generally be considered the "normal" difficulty setting as it is slightly harder than Recruit, but easier than Hardened and Veteran. On Regular difficulty, players take average damage from enemies, and the AI is slightly more accurate than Recruit but less accurate than Hardened.

Hardened - Hardened is one of the four difficulty settings in the Call of Duty series. It is harder than Recruit and Regular but easier than Veteran. Playing on Hardened mode allows players to achieve many of the trophies and achievements that can only be obtained by playing on the harder difficulties, without actually playing on Veteran. It is recommended to play on Veteran, seeing that your health is already low, and you can earn more trophies or achievements. On Hardened, players have less health than earlier difficulties, and the AI is slightly more accurate. The Bots can play on any map in Free-For-All and Team Deathmatch games.

Veteran - Veteran is the hardest of the four difficulties that are in the Call of Duty series. The player will find they'll take much more damage and have very low health, with enemies having increased accuracy and deadly reaction time. It has a reputation among fans of the series as being one of the hardest difficulties conceived in video games, and thus completing it is a noteworthy accomplishment.

All the information above is subject to change as the game is being developed...
